Spring is in the air, but unfortunately, so is the pollen. For those with allergies, this time of year can be miserable.

Some may think if they change the air filters, the allergy symptoms will subside. However, that’s not necessarily true. Here are some facts you need to know.

  1. Regular air filters will remove some dust from the air, but their true intention is to keep your HVAC equipment running efficiently. You need special air filters to trap allergens.
  2. Paper filters will not trap allergens. You will need HEPA (High Energy Particulate Air Filters) to protect yourself from allergens. The best HEPA filters trap more than 99% of pollen, dust, and smoke particles, making it easier to breathe.
  3. Not all HEPA filters are the same. You need to check the MERV rating. The higher the MERV rating (rated 1 to 12), the most effective the filters are at removing pollen.
  4. HEPA filters need to be changed more frequently than ordinary filter, especially during high pollen season. Casto can advise you on what’s recommended for your equipment.
